In a dramatic turn of events the COSA A finals will take place this Wednesday, April 20th, at Garrison starting at 7:15pm After Garrison #1 (Osbornes) took the East COSA championship they could not compete in the COSA finals on April 16th at the Harbour Fitness Club in Belleville. A decision was made to host a semi-final between the North champion (Campbellford) and the COSA East runner-up (Queen's) on April 16th with the winner advancing to face Garrison #1. Queen's won 4-1 and the "RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE", termed by Larry Howes, will take place in 2 days. Spectators are welcome and it might come down to a classic K-town RUMBLE between the legend "David Sly" and the kid "Tyler Osborne"...........should be a good one either way!!

28 Players from London, Toronto, Peterborough, Kingston and Cobourg played in the Campbellford tradition of friendly squash, food & beer (not necessarily it that order). The results are as follows:

There were over 40 players in the tournament playing in 4 levels, A,B,C and D. Out of town players came from Toronto, Kingston, Campbellford,Trenton, Bowmanville and Cobourg to experience 2 days of great squash and fun.
In the A division, Kumar Erramilli, Toronto defeated Sterling Gibbons, Cobourg Y, 3-0 in a fast paced game with great shot making and endurance. In the A consolation, Mark Cossarin, Ptbo GoodLife defeated Ryan Bertrand, Kingston, 3-0. In the A Cup, Dave Bray, Cobourg Y defeated Bentley Nabigon Froese, Peterborough Y.
In the B division Chris Graham, Peteroborough GoodLife narrowly beat Paul Deuzeman, Cobourg Y, 3-2 in a hard fought match that lasted over an hour with both players exhausted by the end of the match. B Consolation winner Tim Griese, Peterborough Y defeated Blake Frazer, Peterborough GoodLife, 3-1. In the B Cup Chris Buys, Peterborough GoodLife played brilliantly in a rematch with James Brown, Peterborough Y, to win 3-0.
In the C/D Divsion, Cory McCartney, U of T defeated Tim Johnston, Bowmanville 3-1 in a very well played match. In the C consolation Bill Forge, Trenton defeated Dave Kelly, Peterborough GoodLife 3-1. In the D Cup, Ryan Pope, Campbellford, defeated Scott McDermott.
Rankings Update
A change has been made to the rankings system. All matches from the past 2 fulls seasons and beginning of this season have been re-run with a new point criteria.
The system looks at the difference in the ranking points between the 2 players and then assigns points based on that difference and the game won or lost in the match.
The max differential is 200 ranking points, and the maximum a player can gain or lose per match is now 60. Previously this was 100 and 30.
The other change that was made was players original starting point from the introduction of this system have been shrunk. If you were above 1000 points, your starting point was reduced by 25%.
If you were below 1000 points, you were bumped up by 25%. If you started at 1000, you stayed there.
The reason for the change was based on the fact that the old system awarded points for victories regardless of the ranking differential, so the points were getting rather large and made it challenging for some people to move up to where they likely belonged.

Updated Challenge Match System
The challenge match input/verification system has been updated for faster and easier result entry. Now 1 player must input the result and opponent email address, and the result will be emailed to the opponent with a verification link. If the result is correct, simply clicking the link (or pasting into a browser and hitting enter) will load the result!
For anyone that had outstanding results that were awaiting verification, you will have to resubmit using this new sysetm.

2010/11 COSA League Fees
Captains, the league fees for the 2010/11 season have been set at $150.00. You can now pay online using the secure PayPal service with a credit card. Log in, input your team name/level and click "Buy Now" to start the process.
There were some decisions made at the recent COSA captains meeting. The B division will be playing PAR 11 scoring this season instead of PAR 15 that was used last year. It was also decided that a player must play a minimum of 5 matches for their team to be eligible to compete in the playoffs. Matches played for double or triple points still only count as 1 match played towards eligibility.
The Rankings have also been updated to remove any players who have not played a ranked match since October 2009. We will also be reprocessing all the matches since this new system has been in place that will reprocess matches in date order and modify the way in which ranking points are calculated. After having a few years off data to review we feel this modification will better represent the rankings and be a better way to determine ranking points going forward.

COSA Wrap-up
This years COSA Intercity Squash league was another success with 23 teams entered into the A, B, and C division. COSA, which spans the area from Brockville-Port Hope-Peterborough, is split into two regions for Intercity (North/West and East). Each region runs independently during the regular season with the winners of each division playing off for the coveted COSA Championship.
The East region comprised of 14 teams with four in the A and C and six in the B. After a strong and competitive regular season the winners from the East were decided on April 10th at the Garrison Squash Club. The Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Center (PEFAC) narrowly won the C division while the Royal Brock (Brockville) won the B. The A division was decided between the two Kingston Garrison Squash Club teams with Team Bell defeating Team Osborne. This years COSA championship was held at the Campbellford & District Curling and Racquet club on April 18th. Peterborough GoodLife G Team was the winner over PEFAC in the C division. This was the first time that a team from North/West has won the C Division. Congratulations to team members Richard Stoter, John McGregor, Matt Imeson, Peter Green, and Chris Graham for this historic win.
Both the A and B finals went the distance with the East prevailing in both contests. The Kingston Garrison Squash Club beat Campbellford for the A championship while Royal Brock beat the Peterborough GoodLife Spartans for the B.
A special thanks to Rob Pope for hosting the event and showing once again that squash and beer go hand in hand. COSA was also grateful for the efforts of Ray Kerslake (North/West) and Scott Tindale (East) for managing the two COSA Intercity leagues.

Input Your Inter-Squad Matches
You can now input your inter-squad/House League/Challenge matches or just any match between COSA players and have them show up in the COSA Rankings!
Be sure to agree before a match that it will count as a COSA Ranked match and afterward come to the site and input the result. Both players must input the score. You must have a email address of your own and your opponents email address. After the first player inputs the result, an email will be sent to the opponent asking them to input the same result. Once the matching result is input, the score will be added to the COSA Rankings (after it is verified by system administrator).

Squash Rule of the Week
INTERFERENCE
When it is his or her turn to play the ball, a player is entitled to freedom from interference by the opponent.
To avoid interference, the opponent must try to provide the player with unobstructed direct access to the ball, a fair view of the ball, space to complete a swing at the ball and freedom to play the ball directly to any part of the front wall.
A player, finding the opponent interfering with the play, can accept the interference and play on, or stop play. It is preferable to stop play if there is a possibility of colliding with the opponent, or of hitting him or her with racket or ball.
When play has stopped as a result of interference the general guidelines are:
The player is entitled to a let if he or she could have returned the ball and the opponent has made every effort to avoid the interference.
The player is not entitled to a let (i.e. loses the rally) if he or she could not have returned the ball, or accepts the interference and plays on, or the interference was so minimal that the player�s access to and strike at the ball was not affected.
The player is entitled to a stroke (i.e. wins the rally) if the opponent did not make every effort to avoid the interference, or if the player would have hit a winning return, or if the player would have struck the opponent with the ball going directly to the front wall.
If the striker has either followed the ball round, or allowed it to pass around him or her - in either case striking the ball to the right of the body after the ball had passed to the left (or vice-versa) - then the striker has "TURNED".
If the opponent is struck by the ball after the striker has turned, the rally is awarded to the opponent.
If the striker, while turning, stops play for fear of striking the opponent, then a let is played. This is the recommended course of action in situations where a player wants to turn but is unsure of the opponent�s position.
The Referee shall not allow a let if deciding that the act of turning was to create the opportunity to appeal rather than an attempt to return the ball.

City League 2009/2010
The new city league season started on Wed, Oct 21. League schedules have been sent to team captains.
The ranking/league standings system on the COSA web site has been changed to allow each team captain to enter league results directly into the system, upating team standings and player rankings. Instructions for using the new system have been emailed to team captains.
The first few weeks of the schedule are now online, the remaining schedule dates will be updated over the next week.
